Chetumal, Quintana Roo — A young entrepreneur from Quintana Roo is trying to change the way people rest in hammocks with Mecete, a project to build a device that rocks them automatically.
The initiative is led by José Reinaldo Guzmán Darza, a business administration graduate of the Instituto Tecnológico de Chetumal who is now pursuing a master’s degree in business management at the Universidad del Valle de México.
Presenting the project to judges at Innova Fest, Guzmán said the goal is to develop one of the first devices of its kind in Mexico, bringing technology to a tradition deeply rooted in the Yucatan Peninsula.
Modernizing a Traditional Habit
The project addresses a daily routine for hammock users: keeping the hammock moving with small pushes of the feet, pulling a rope, or asking someone else for help.
Guzmán argues that automation could change how people use the traditional bed and open new possibilities for its use in homes.
During his presentation, he also noted that the constant motion people experience while sleeping has been the subject of scientific studies on the vestibular system, which governs balance and spatial orientation.
Aiming to Support Yucatan Artisans
Beyond creating a new product, Mecete is intended to generate economic benefits for families who make hammocks by hand.
The proposal calls for creating a company to manufacture and sell the device, which could encourage the purchase of new hammocks and raise demand for products made by artisans in the region.
The entrepreneur also raised the possibility of formalizing job opportunities for people who work in the traditional hammock trade.
Seeking Support to Refine the Prototype
The project already has a patent application on file and two prototypes, one small-scale and one full-size. According to Guzmán, the device has moved loads of up to 30 kilograms but still needs technical adjustments before it can be developed commercially.
His participation in Innova Fest is aimed at securing support to perfect the mechanism and move toward a launch. With Mecete, the young entrepreneur is betting on combining technology, tradition and regional economic development through an innovation focused on hammocks.
