Cancun, Quintana Roo — An 18-year-old man died early Friday after a police patrol chased him on a dirt road near the Cuna Maya irregular settlement, close to the CECYTE school in the Benito Juárez municipality.
According to preliminary reports, officers were pursuing the victim as a suspicious person. The young man, riding a motorcycle with another individual, tried to evade the police. People close to the deceased said he had previous encounters with officers in which they allegedly took cash and belongings from him, which may have influenced his decision to flee.
Unofficial sources indicate the young man had a criminal record, though details were not provided. Witnesses said he was accompanied by others at the time of the incident, who abandoned him after the crash.
The incident occurred around 4 a.m. when the motorcyclist lost control and hit a wall, dying at the scene. Emergency medical services arrived but confirmed he had no vital signs.
An unconfirmed version identifies the victim by initials J.G.L.O. and suggests he may have been involved in a prior robbery of a cell phone. Authorities allegedly tracked the device via GPS to the area where the accident occurred.
Investigators from the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office and forensic experts processed the scene and removed the body. The investigation is ongoing, and no official results have been released.
