Merida, Yucatan — The Tren Maya has announced fare reductions of up to 30% across all routes and ticket categories, under the slogan “We got off so you can get on.”
Local and special fares have dropped by 20%, while a new “Turista Mexico” category has been created for both domestic and international travelers, offering discounts of up to 30% compared to previous prices.
The local fare applies to residents of the five states along the Tren Maya route: Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatan, and Quintana Roo. The special fare is for senior citizens, teachers, students, and people with disabilities. The previous higher-priced foreigner-only fare has been eliminated, unifying international and national rates.
For example, tickets from Merida to Campeche dropped from 323 to 258 pesos for locals, from 484 to 339 pesos for national tourists, and the special fare is now 207 pesos. The route has three daily departures: 10:55 a.m., 12:19 p.m., and 7:29 p.m., with a travel time of about 2 hours 20 minutes including five intermediate stops. By comparison, ADO bus tickets for the same route range from 186 to 488 pesos depending on schedule and service type.
Tickets from Merida Teya to Cancun Airport fell from 781 to 547 pesos for tourists (national and international), from 521 to 417 pesos for locals, and the special fare is 333 pesos. The journey takes just over 3.5 hours with six stops, and there are six daily departures: 7:00 a.m., 9:18 a.m., 10:45 a.m., 1:05 p.m., 3:20 p.m., and 4:22 p.m. ADO bus tickets from Merida to Cancun range from 501 to 920 pesos, with airport-bound services costing 1,030 pesos.
On the Cancun to Chichen Itza route, tickets are now 351 pesos for tourists and 268 pesos for locals. For longer trips, such as Cancun to Palenque, fares are 1,169 and 891 pesos, respectively.
The company said the adjustments aim to make the rail service more accessible, allowing more people to use this mode of transport. Passengers can check schedules, routes, and service types through official channels and the Tren Maya mobile app.
Tickets are available at reservas.ventaboletostrenmaya.com.mx, at any of the 34 stations, or at physical sales points. In Merida, tickets can be purchased at the Tren Maya offices on Calle 50, Carretera Merida-Progreso. In Campeche, the point of sale is at Plaza Galerias. In Cancun, tickets are available at Plaza Puerto Cancun in the hotel zone.
During President Claudia Sheinbaum’s morning press conference on April 24, Tourism Secretary Josefina Rodriguez Zamora reported that 22,821 Tren Maya tickets were sold to international tourists in the first two months of this year, a 41% increase compared to the same period last year. She added that during Holy Week, the train carried 10,000 passengers in just two days.
Last month, Tren Maya General Director Oscar David Lozano Aguila said the railway has transported more than 2.3 million passengers since its inauguration in 2023. He noted that the system currently operates 20 daily services along 1,554 kilometers of track, with plans to increase to 32 runs this year.
