Students in Cancún Protest Alleged Sexual Assault at Teachers College

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Students at a teachers college in Cancún protested Friday morning to demand justice for a classmate who was allegedly sexually assaulted on campus, accusing school officials of failing to act.

The student community of the Centro Regional de Educación Normal (CREN) “Bacalar Q. Roo,” located in Supermanzana 91, staged the demonstration to draw attention to the case and demand better security conditions inside the institution.

Mario Sánchez, president of the student community, said the attack took place Tuesday of last week as a group of students was entering the school grounds.

According to his account, the victim, whose identity is being withheld, was grabbed from behind by a man who forcibly restrained her while allegedly touching her inappropriately.

What alarmed students and their families most, Sánchez said, was that the assault occurred in the middle of a group of young people — yet those present told investigators they had not seen the attacker.

School Failed to Activate Support Protocols

The incident was reported to the school’s administration, but Sánchez said officials did not activate the protocols for assisting and supporting the victim, which deepened the anger among her classmates and relatives.

With the school failing to respond, a complaint was filed with the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Sexual Crimes, which has opened an investigation to clarify the events and determine the identity of the perpetrator.

The student leader also said the student received threats after the attack, prompting her to stop attending classes because she fears for her safety.

The alleged attacker has not been publicly identified and, according to the protesters, continues to face no consequences within the institution.

The demonstration was intended to bring visibility to the case, demand support for the victim and press education authorities to cooperate with the investigation and guarantee safety for the student body.
