Cancún, Quintana Roo — Shark sightings along the coast of Quintana Roo have become increasingly common, with tiger sharks and hammerheads appearing in areas such as Cancún, Isla Mujeres, and Cozumel. Experts say the trend reflects a healthier marine ecosystem.
Pamela Vázquez, sustainability director at Saving Our Sharks, noted that three or four decades ago such species were rarely observed in the region. Now, encounters are more frequent, including recent reports of sharks near Cancún beaches.
Vázquez emphasized that sharks do not consider humans part of their diet and urged the public to move past the dangerous image perpetuated by films. Still, she advised calm and caution: leave the water without sudden movements, avoid provoking the animals, and follow lifeguard and official instructions.
She also recommended staying out of the water near fishing activities or where bait is present and being extra cautious during twilight and night hours, when sharks often come closer to shore to feed.
Sharks play a vital role in ocean balance by controlling fish populations and contributing to reef health, Vázquez said. Fatal attacks remain extremely rare worldwide, and she stressed the importance of protecting these species and promoting responsible coexistence with marine life.
