Mexico City — The Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) has submitted a draft proposal for the 2026-2027 school calendar, setting 185 effective class days for basic education levels across Mexico.

The proposal, sent to the Integral Platform for Regulatory Governance, complies with the legal requirement of 185 to 200 school days established by the General Education Law. It applies to public preschools, elementary and middle schools, as well as private schools incorporated into the national education system, and teacher training institutions.

Under the plan, the school year will begin on Monday, August 31, 2026, and end on Friday, July 9, 2027. Teachers will participate in a preparatory week in August before students return.

Vacation periods and breaks

The calendar includes two main vacation periods and a six-week summer break. Winter vacation runs from December 21, 2026, to January 6, 2027. Spring break (Semana Santa) is scheduled from March 22 to April 2, 2027.

The current 2025-2026 cycle ends on July 15, 2026, giving students about six weeks of summer vacation before the new cycle begins.

Technical Council sessions and holidays

Eight ordinary sessions of the Technical School Council (CTE) are planned, all on Fridays, during which students will not attend classes. The sessions are set for: September 25, October 30, November 27, 2026; January 29, February 26, April 30, May 28, and June 25, 2027.

Official holidays include: September 16 (Independence Day); the third Monday of November (Revolution Day); the first Monday of February 2027 (Constitution Day); the third Monday of March 2027 (Benito Juárez’s birthday); and May 1 (Labor Day).

Grade reporting and legal validity

Three specific dates are reserved for teachers to submit grades: November 13, 2026; March 5, 2027; and June 18, 2027.

The draft must still be published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) to take effect. Once published, the 185-day calendar will govern the national education system for the 2026-2027 cycle.
