Mahahual, Quintana Roo — The recent influx of sargassum on the shores of Mahahual has exceeded projections for this year, according to authorities from Mexico’s Secretariat of the Navy (Semar). The unprecedented volume of the macroalgae has prompted intensified cleanup operations, with officials warning that the southern region of Quintana Roo is likely to bear the brunt of the mass arrivals.
Unprecedented Sargassum Volume Strains Cleanup Efforts
Vice Admiral Marco Antonio Muñoz Hernández, who leads sargassum mitigation operations, confirmed that the current accumulation along Mahahual’s coastline is unusually high. “The quantity is greater and atypical—far beyond normal levels compared to previous years,” he stated.
In 2024, approximately 37,000 metric tons of sargassum were collected across Quintana Roo. However, forecasts indicate this year’s volume could significantly surpass that figure, particularly in the state’s southern zone, where Mahahual is already experiencing severe impacts.
Emergency Measures Implemented
To alleviate pressure from the excessive buildup, Semar has opened anti-sargassum barriers and designated a “sacrifice zone” to facilitate removal. “We opened the barriers to prevent overloading and assigned a specific area to streamline collection,” explained Vice Admiral Muñoz.
Cleanup efforts involve coordination between federal, state, and local authorities, as well as community participation. Authorities have urged residents and tourists—both domestic and international—to avoid restricted beach areas and comply with directives to prevent disruptions to operations.
Public Advisory Issued
Officials have issued warnings to keep clear of affected zones and refrain from interfering with cleanup activities. The public is encouraged to follow official guidelines to minimize health and environmental risks associated with decomposing sargassum.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as forecasts suggest further challenges ahead for the region’s coastal communities.
