Tulum, Mexico — The municipality of Tulum collected a total of 403 tons of sargassum in April 2025, significantly exceeding the 241 tons removed during the same period last year. The cleanup efforts were led by the Federal Maritime-Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) team in Tulum, under the direction of Juan Antonio Garza Pérez, in coordination with the Quintana Roo state government, the Mexican Navy, and various tourism sector stakeholders.

Intensified Efforts Amid Rising Sargassum Influx

The operations were conducted along the municipality’s coastline throughout the month, as officials anticipate a 30% increase in sargassum accumulation in 2025 compared to the previous year.

Garza Pérez commended his team’s dedication, emphasizing their daily commitment to beach cleaning from early morning hours.

“I congratulate the entire team for their relentless and unwavering effort. We address multiple fronts daily, working alongside the state government, the Navy, and other agencies. These results demonstrate what can be achieved when we are committed to protecting our beaches,” said Garza Pérez.

Call for Broader Collaboration

The Zofemat director also acknowledged hoteliers already contributing to cleanup initiatives while urging others to join the environmental effort.

“We know this is a shared responsibility. That’s why I thank the business owners who are actively collaborating, and I respectfully invite those who haven’t yet joined to participate in this cause for the benefit of Tulum and its natural environment,” he added.

Projections Signal Challenging Season Ahead

With these results, Zofemat Tulum is reinforcing its strategy ahead of what is expected to be one of the most intense sargassum seasons in recent years. Official projections estimate that over 57,000 tons of sargassum could reach Quintana Roo’s shores in 2025, underscoring the need for continued and expanded cooperation among authorities, private businesses, and civil society to safeguard the region’s coastal ecosystem.
