Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A natural freshwater spring emerged off the coast of Playa del Carmen over the weekend, drawing the attention of residents and visitors before being quickly obscured by a massive accumulation of sargasso seaweed.
The spring appeared in a coastal area where underground currents typical of the Yucatan Peninsula geology discharge into the sea. Specialists explain that such upwellings occur when pressure increases in freshwater flowing through the subsurface, forcing it to find an outlet into the ocean.
Although the phenomenon sparked curiosity among beachgoers, the heavy presence of macroalgae made it difficult to observe. Cleanup crews continue working to remove sargasso from various points along the Playa del Carmen coastline, as this year’s tourist season has been marked by heavy seaweed arrivals.
Beyond affecting beach aesthetics, the algae accumulation temporarily alters coastal conditions and reduces visibility of natural processes normally visible from the shore.
The region is experiencing one of the most intense sargasso influx periods in recent years, putting pressure on tourism service providers and beach cleaning teams.
Despite the seaweed, the freshwater upwelling served as a reminder of the complex connection between Quintana Roo’s underground river system and the Caribbean Sea — a geological feature that distinguishes this part of Mexico and occasionally becomes visible along the coast.
