Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The municipal government has deployed a new lifeguard tower and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) at Playa Fundadores to strengthen safety and speed up emergency response along the coastline.
Mayor Estefanía Mercado said the equipment is part of a strategy to expand surveillance coverage at one of the area’s most visited beaches and improve coordination between lifeguards and the Tourist Police.
“We continue investing in infrastructure that protects the lives of those who enjoy our beaches. The safety of local families and visitors is a priority,” Mercado said during the handover ceremony.
The tower gives rescue personnel a wider field of view and faster response times, while the ATVs will support patrols and allow staff to move quickly along the sand. According to the municipal government, the new equipment extends operational coverage from Playa Fundadores to Punta Esmeralda, a stretch of coastline that draws large numbers of visitors during vacation periods.
The tower is made from recycled high-density polyethylene and polypropylene, materials chosen to withstand humidity, salt and intense sun, which reduces maintenance costs and extends its lifespan. The project was coordinated by the Secretariat of Civil Protection, Risk Prevention and Firefighters.
Mercado also recognized the local chapter of the Mexican Association of Business Women (AMEXME), led by Valeria Rinderstma, and business owners who help with sargassum cleanup at Playa Fundadores using specialized machinery and equipment.
