Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Several restaurants along Quinta Avenida, the popular pedestrian strip in this Mexican Caribbean resort town, have closed their doors, though several chains have expressed interest in opening locations there by the end of the year or early next.
Roberto Lepe, the Playa del Carmen president of the National Chamber of the Restaurant Industry and Seasoned Food (Canirac), said he hopes the new openings will help give Quinta Avenida a fresh look.
“This has been one of the main economic drivers, alongside hotels, and we want it to recover that shine, when you walked along the Quinta and saw rivers and seas of people, and restaurants with open arms welcoming you with gastronomic offerings of all kinds,” he said.
Lepe noted that as a tourist destination, Playa del Carmen goes through cycles of high and low season, but that the impact this year has been greater than in previous years because of the arrival of sargassum seaweed.
In September, foot traffic on Quinta Avenida has been notably low — an extension of a summer that was equally difficult.
