Rear-End Crash on Cancun’s New Nichupté Bridge Marks Second Incident Since Opening
Cancun, Quintana Roo — A rear-end collision on the newly inaugurated Nichupté Bridge on Monday afternoon marked the second traffic incident on the structure since it opened last week.
The crash occurred around 2:30 p.m. on the Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard-to-Hotel Zone direction, just meters from the bridge’s arch. A red SUV sustained front-end damage, while a gray compact car was hit in the rear.
Neither driver was injured, and paramedics were not needed at the scene, authorities said.
State Highway Police closed the third lane for approximately 400 meters, causing moderate traffic delays. A tow truck was called to remove the vehicles as officials determine fault.
The incident follows a crash on the bridge’s opening day, May 6, when a driver lost control and hit bollards on the bike lane. Since the bridge opened, authorities have urged drivers to obey speed limits and drive responsibly.
