Quintana Roo Warns Foreign Tourists: Expired Passports Could Derail Departure

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Mexican immigration authorities are reminding foreign tourists visiting Quintana Roo that their passports must remain valid for the entire duration of their stay, warning that an expired document can prevent departure and create legal complications.

According to Mexico’s National Immigration Institute (INM), passports must be valid from the moment of entry until the traveler leaves the country. While Mexico does not require a minimum six-month validity, it does mandate that the document be current throughout the visitor’s stay.

Quintana Roo, home to Cancún, Riviera Maya, Tulum, Cozumel, and Bacalar, is one of Mexico’s busiest international gateways. Cancún International Airport handles millions of passengers annually, making timely passport checks especially important.

If a passport expires during a trip, the traveler must contact their country’s embassy or consulate in Mexico to obtain a new document before departing. The INM has no authority to issue or renew foreign passports — that responsibility falls solely to diplomatic representations.

Tourism specialists recommend travelers check their passport expiration date well before booking a trip to Quintana Roo. If it is set to expire during their planned stay, they should begin renewal procedures with their embassy or consulate in advance to avoid delays, extra costs, or being unable to leave Mexico.
