CANCÚN, Q. ROO — In an effort to strengthen and expand services for women victims of violence, the government of Quintana Roo is planning to construct a new Center for Justice for Women (CJM) in Cancún. Furthermore, the CJM located in the municipality of Tulum is set to be inaugurated in the coming weeks, with a special focus on serving women from the Mayan zone.
Raciel López Salazar, head of the State Attorney General's Office (FGE), disclosed this information, highlighting that these actions are part of the state government's commitment to the protection and comprehensive service for women. Although he did not offer specific details about the new center in Cancún, he indicated that Governor Mara Lezama will make the formal announcement.
However, he revealed that the project seeks to expand and modernize the services already offered at the current CJM located on Ruta 5. "The Governor has a project to reinforce a Center for Justice for Women, but here in Cancún, with a more updated model, with greater response capabilities for women," López Salazar stated.
The Attorney General considered it fundamental to increase the response capacity of these institutions, noting that this new center would be the second in Cancún, but with better conditions and more efficient services.
And in Tulum…
Regarding the Center for Justice for Women in Tulum, López Salazar reported that the construction is already completed and equipped, though some minor details remain to be resolved. The inauguration is expected to take place in less than a month, pending the coordination of the Governor's schedule.
"We are talking in less than a month, once it is one hundred percent ready; remember that this is a Center for Justice that will provide attention to a significant part of the Mayan community," he said. "We are working to ensure the best qualified public servants are there, qualified, to be at the forefront of this Center."
This new CJM represented an investment of more than 40 million pesos and will provide, in a single space, psychological, legal, and medical attention. It will also feature an emergency shelter, a specialized playroom for girls and adolescents who are victims of violence, and empowerment workshops.
More than 22,000 women live in Tulum, one in four of whom speaks an indigenous language. This new center will provide them with respectful attention to their human rights, with an inclusive and specialized focus. Beyond Tulum, the center will also benefit nearly 243,000 women, girls, and adolescents from municipalities such as Puerto Morelos, Cozumel, and Playa del Carmen, thereby strengthening their access to justice and comprehensive protection.
So far this year, the CJM of Benito Juárez (Cancún) has provided initial attention to 2,359 women, in addition to receiving 5,193 subsequent visits, totaling 25,356 services. In Playa del Carmen, the center has attended to 1,419 women on their first visit and registered 302 subsequent ones, with a total of 12,070 services. In Chetumal, 923 initial attentions have been provided, along with 1,204 subsequent ones and a total of 6,092 services.
