Quintana Roo Summer Electricity Subsidy Now in Effect Through October

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa announced that the annual summer electricity subsidy is now active across Quintana Roo and will remain in effect through October 31, providing relief to thousands of households as temperatures—and energy use—rise.

The announcement was made during her weekly citizen outreach program La Voz del Pueblo, where she addresses public concerns and clarifies ongoing government programs. Lezama emphasized that, despite rumors circulating on social media, the subsidy has not been canceled and is already being applied automatically to eligible residential users.

The program is implemented through Mexico’s state-owned utility, Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), and applies to households under tariff categories 1A through 1F. These tariff tiers are used nationwide to reflect regional climate conditions, with hotter regions—like Quintana Roo—assigned higher consumption thresholds before higher rates are triggered.

How the Subsidy Works

During the summer months, the federal government increases the amount of electricity households can consume at lower, subsidized rates before moving into more expensive billing tiers. In practical terms, this means families can use more electricity—primarily for cooling—without seeing the same spike in costs they would during the rest of the year.

The subsidy is not a flat discount. Instead, it adjusts the consumption limits within each pricing tier, allowing more kilowatt-hours (kWh) to be billed at the lowest rates. The benefit appears directly on CFE bills under a line labeled “government support,” where users can see both their total consumption and the amount subsidized.

In Quintana Roo, where average temperatures regularly exceed 25°C—and often climb well into the 30s—electricity use increases significantly due to air conditioning, refrigeration, and constant fan use. Without the subsidy, many households would quickly move into higher тариф brackets, resulting in steep bills.

Lezama noted that the program represents an investment of more than 87 million pesos, aimed at easing the financial burden during the hottest part of the year.

Why It Matters

Electricity subsidies like this are especially important in the Mexican Caribbean, where heat and humidity are not just seasonal—they’re constant. The summer months, however, bring peak demand, and with it, the risk of households exceeding their base consumption limits.

Exceeding those limits can push users into higher тариф tiers or, in some cases, into DAC (Domestic High Consumption), a classification where subsidies are removed entirely and rates increase significantly.

Tips to Manage Your Bill This Summer

Even with the subsidy in place, consumption still matters. A few small adjustments can make a noticeable difference:

  • Set your AC to 24–26°C — Every degree lower increases energy use significantly
  • Use fans alongside AC to circulate cool air more efficiently
  • Keep doors and windows sealed to prevent cool air from escaping
  • Limit peak-hour usage (late afternoon and early evening) when demand is highest
  • Clean AC filters regularly to improve efficiency
  • Unplug unused electronics that draw “phantom” power
  • Switch to LED lighting where possible

A Balance Between Relief and Responsibility

While the subsidy provides meaningful financial relief, officials stress that it is not a free pass for unlimited consumption. The structure is designed to help households manage essential cooling needs—not to eliminate the cost of high usage altogether.

Lezama encouraged residents to take advantage of the program while continuing to use electricity responsibly, noting that long-term sustainability depends on both government support and individual habits.

As summer intensifies across Quintana Roo, the subsidy offers a welcome buffer—but understanding how it works, and how to manage consumption, can make the difference between a manageable bill and an unexpected one.
