Quintana Roo Ranks Among 15 Worst States for Road Conditions, INEGI Says

Cancún, Quintana Roo — A new study by Mexico’s national statistics agency INEGI has placed Quintana Roo among the 15 worst states in the country for road conditions, highlighting widespread deterioration that has frustrated residents and drivers.

The National Survey on Government Quality and Impact (ENCIG) found that only 14.7% of the population aged 18 and older nationwide considers streets and avenues in urban areas to be in good condition. In Quintana Roo, just 22.4% of residents approved of road conditions, ranking the state 13th nationally — below the national average of 23.7%. Guanajuato topped the list with 30.8% approval.

The survey also measured public perception of timely and quality pothole and drain repairs. Quintana Roo ranked 14th with 10.2% satisfaction, again below the national average of 10.9%. Guanajuato led with 21.4%.

Private drivers, business owners, and public transport operators in Cancún reported that while some main arteries have seen improvements, most roads remain in poor shape. A worker from Supermanzana 510 noted that a stretch of Avenida Cancún, known as Las Torres, shows significant wear, especially cracks in the asphalt between Avenidas La Luna and Chac Mool, where potholes appear frequently during the rainy season.

A motorcyclist said Avenida Galaxias del Sol, which crosses several housing complexes, also has numerous defects between Avenida Chac Mool and Lak’in. In the Unidad Morelos area, one of the oldest parts of the city, a severely damaged section of Avenida Chichén Itzá between Avenidas Comalcalco and Chac Mool was also reported.
