Quintana Roo Police to Get Body Cameras That Cannot Be Turned Off

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Police officers in Quintana Roo will soon receive body cameras that cannot be turned off during their shifts, as part of a new purchase of 600 to 800 devices by the state’s Executive Secretariat of the Public Security System (SESESC).

The goal is to equip at least 50% of all operational officers across the state’s 11 municipalities, up from the current 40%, said Adrián Martínez Ortega, head of SESESC. The new cameras will also allow real-time monitoring to enhance transparency and safety during police interventions.

“We have about 40% of officers covered; we aim to reach 50% or a bit more. We’re looking for a camera that gives us more security, one that the officer cannot turn off for safety reasons,” Martínez Ortega said.

The final number of devices will depend on costs submitted by suppliers during the procurement process. Martínez Ortega noted that no cases of misuse of body cameras have been detected in Quintana Roo so far, but each new purchase aims to improve technological efficiency and oversight mechanisms.

The purchase will be funded with federal resources from the Fondo de Aportaciones para la Seguridad Pública (FASP) and the Fondo para el Fortalecimiento de las Instituciones de Seguridad Pública (FOFISP). These funds, which are 50% to 60% disbursed, also benefit the Public Security Secretariat, the State Prosecutor’s Office, and other agencies.
