Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — The municipality of Puerto Morelos plans to install a network of surveillance cameras along the Cenote Route this year as part of a broader initiative focused on security, infrastructure, and urban development, Mayor Blanca Merari announced.

In an interview, Merari detailed that 20 cameras will be placed along this tourist corridor, stretching from Central Vallarta to Leona Vicario, to enhance safety for visitors and residents.

“Thanks to coordinated work with CSICOM, we will achieve the installation of these cameras,” she said.

The estimated investment for the project is approximately 5 million pesos, with funding provided by both the municipality and a trust fund. Merari noted that the Cenote Route, recognized as an adventure destination, previously lacked this type of infrastructure.

The mayor also previewed the construction of a new security base in the area and the creation of the municipality’s first dog park, as part of efforts to strengthen public services and community interaction.

Regarding solid waste, Merari said the municipality is coordinating with Benito Juárez for final disposal, though it seeks its own site, as Puerto Morelos currently generates between 40 and 80 tons of waste daily. “Puerto Morelos is looking to have its own disposal site,” she affirmed.

She explained that discussions are underway with state and federal authorities, as well as local ejido communities, to identify a suitable plot of land and conduct necessary technical studies.

Merari believes this project could be finalized before the end of the current state administration, aiming to reduce costs associated with waste transport.

She also emphasized that the municipality’s growth must remain orderly and continue to prioritize tourism, noting that the region maintains its appeal as an attractive destination.
