Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Approximately 50 mantled howler monkeys will be relocated from Playa del Carmen to the state of Veracruz later this year, according to Javier Carballar Osorio, director of the Institute of Biodiversity and Protected Natural Areas of Quintana Roo (Ibanqroo).
Background and Conservation Concerns
The monkeys were seized during an operation more than 20 years ago and subsequently placed in an area within the Playacar complex. At the time, the group consisted of just over 10 individuals. Over the years, the population has grown significantly, now exceeding 50 specimens.
Carballar Osorio explained that the relocation is necessary to prevent potential interbreeding with the native howler monkey species of Quintana Roo. “It’s a jungle area where the monkeys settled comfortably, reproduced, and now is the time to manage their population and return them to avoid hybridization with the local species,” he stated.
Coordination and Logistics
Authorities are working with counterparts in Veracruz to determine the most suitable conditions for the transfer. The Institute of Ecology (Inecol) is currently processing federal permits and evaluating whether the relocation will be conducted by air or land, with efforts focused on minimizing stress for the animals.
No specific timeline for the relocation has been announced, but officials emphasized the urgency of the initiative to preserve the genetic integrity of the region’s native primate population.
