Tulum, Quintana Roo — A pregnant woman was hospitalized after being struck by an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) while walking with her husband on a main avenue in Tulum, authorities said.
The incident occurred on Mercurio Oriente Avenue, before the intersection with Cobá Avenue. The couple was walking along the road when a female foreign national driving an ATV hit them, according to preliminary reports.
The woman, who is five months pregnant, suffered an apparent injury to her right knee and intense abdominal pain. She remained on the pavement while family members and bystanders offered assistance. Her husband was also struck but sustained only minor injuries and abrasions.
Two ATVs were involved in the accident — one driven by the suspected responsible party and another occupied by two other foreign nationals, a man and a woman.
Municipal traffic police officers arrived and cordoned off the area to control traffic and initiate investigations into the crash. Red Cross paramedics provided pre-hospital care, immobilizing the pregnant woman before transferring her to Costamed Hospital at her family’s request for a specialized evaluation to rule out any risk to her or the baby. Civil Protection personnel also assisted at the scene.
