Police Detain One of Three Men Who Tried to Rob Young Man in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A young man narrowly escaped being robbed in this coastal city after three men who offered to take him to a brothel instead tried to take the cash he was carrying, according to the account he gave police and neighbors.

The young man, described as slim and carrying a backpack, began shouting for help shortly after 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, in the Ejido neighborhood. He told residents he had gone to the corner of Juárez Avenue and 65th Street because the men had said they would take him to a house of assignation.

He said the men had told him beforehand to bring the cash he would need to pay for the “experience” — money they then tried to steal.

After he called for help, neighbors located a patrol car and told municipal police officers what had happened. When officers tried to speak with the group, two of the three suspects fled. The third was detained and turned over to authorities in connection with the attempted robbery.

The young man was taken to the offices of the Public Security Department to file a report and then to the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office to lodge a formal complaint.
