Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The Municipal Planning Institute (IMPLAN) has begun technical assessments to build a safe pedestrian crossing between Plaza Las Américas and Malecón Tajamar, addressing what officials call a critical mobility hazard in this high-traffic area.

IMPLAN director Héctor Sánchez Tirado said more than 10,000 people pass through the zone daily, with many forced to cross a median due to inadequate infrastructure, exposing them to potential accidents.

He identified the situation as a red flag for urban mobility, noting that pedestrian flow exceeds the current capacity of the space and forces dangerous maneuvers.

Sánchez Tirado also highlighted that users include people with disabilities, exacerbating the problem due to a lack of minimum accessibility conditions for a safe and inclusive crossing.

The official emphasized that the project aims to address this need without disrupting vehicle traffic, as part of a broader strategy to reclaim public spaces and prioritize pedestrians in key city areas.
