Playa del Carmen Residents Plan Protest Over Power Outages During Anniversary Concert

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Residents of Playa del Carmen are mobilizing for a protest against recurring power outages, planned for July 28 to coincide with the city’s 33rd anniversary celebrations featuring a concert by Mexican singer Kenia Os.

Through social media and WhatsApp groups, citizens from various neighborhoods have called for a demonstration to demand a solution to the electrical failures that have plagued the city in recent days. The protest is scheduled to begin one hour before the concert, which is set for 8 p.m.

The call to action gained momentum after a group of residents blocked the road to El Tintal early Sunday morning in protest of the outages. Organizers are using platforms such as the Facebook page “Mercado Libre Playa del Carmen Oficial” and WhatsApp groups like “Solución a Apagones” and “Villas sin Luz” to coordinate. A new group called “Plantón para CFE y Palacio” (Federal Electricity Commission and City Hall) has also been created to rally participants.

The protest flyer reads: “We don’t want more concerts! We want to live well! Playa del Carmen deserves dignified electricity!”

The demonstration is intended to draw attention to the power supply issues during the official anniversary events. The solemn session for the 33rd anniversary will take place at the city theater, unlike previous years when it was held in the plaza in front of city hall.
