Playa del Carmen Launches ‘Parquemania’ to Build or Rehab 179 Parks

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Mayor Estefanía Mercado has launched “Parquemanía,” a comprehensive program to build or rehabilitate 179 parks across neighborhoods and subdivisions of Playa del Carmen, aiming to recover public spaces, strengthen community ties, and provide safe, dignified environments for families.

The program kicked off in the Villamar I subdivision, where Mercado oversaw the start of work on a new park at the intersection of Misión del Carmen Avenue and Misión Villamar Boulevard. The project has an investment of 2.4 million pesos (about $130,000) from the Municipal Social Infrastructure Fund (FAISMUN).

“We are going to prioritize our neighborhoods with more infrastructure and public works,” Mercado said. “The construction and rehabilitation of 179 parks — coordinated with various city departments — is a comprehensive project to strengthen family coexistence and bring life back to our public spaces.”

The new Villamar I park will include a skating area, a dog park, a bus stop, playgrounds, benches, and pedestrian paths, designed for recreation, physical activity, and social interaction for all ages.

As part of the city’s sustainable urban development vision, the project will prioritize preserving existing trees to maintain environmental benefits and contribute to a more resilient city.

The mayor reiterated her administration’s commitment to continue promoting projects that respond to citizens’ needs and turn public spaces into true gathering points for families.
