Playa del Carmen Reports 53% Drop in Homicides for First Quarter of 2026

Playa del Carmen Mayor Estefanía Mercado meets with security officials to discuss crime reduction

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Playa del Carmen has reported a 53% decrease in homicides during the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period last year, according to Mayor Estefanía Mercado, who attributed the results to a security strategy focused on ground operations and interagency coordination.

During a meeting with Municipal Citizen Security Secretary Carlos Montesinos and Cabinet Coordinator Arturo Castro, the mayor stated that the reduction reflects collaborative work between municipal, state, and federal authorities.

“We achieved a 53% reduction in homicides. This isn’t coincidence—it’s the result of working every day on the ground and implementing a strategy that puts peace at the center,” Mercado said.

The mayor emphasized that her administration maintains a clear security approach based on prevention, police presence, and operational actions.

“Security isn’t something to boast about—it’s something you build. And we’re building it with order, prevention, and firm actions,” she added.

Despite the positive results, Mercado warned that authorities will not relax their efforts, stating that the goal remains ensuring safety for families.

“We continue moving forward without letting our guard down because our commitment is to our people’s peace,” she concluded.

The municipal government reiterated that it will continue strengthening security strategies in coordination with state and federal authorities.
