Playa del Carmen Installs 5 Kilometers of Anti-Sargassum Barriers Along Coastline

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Playa del Carmen has installed five kilometers of anti-sargassum barriers along its central coastline as part of a broader effort to protect beaches and sustain tourism, Mayor Estefanía Mercado announced.

The barriers now protect the stretch between Playa Fundadores and Punta Esmeralda, one of the city’s main tourist corridors, with support from the Mexican Navy (Semar).

“We now have five kilometers of barriers protecting the central zone, from Playa Fundadores to Punta Esmeralda — a strategic action to care for our coastline and keep our beaches in the best condition,” Mercado said.

The mayor said the work is part of coordinated efforts among federal, state, and municipal authorities, including backing from Gov. Mara Lezama and President Claudia Sheinbaum, whose administration has promoted a comprehensive sargassum containment and collection strategy for the Mexican Caribbean.

Mercado also recognized personnel from Playa del Carmen’s Federal Maritime-Terrestrial Zone office (Zofemat) and the Navy, who are handling installation and daily containment work.

“When we work as a team, we deliver better results for our people and for the future of Playa del Carmen,” she said.
