Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The municipal government will continue its pet registration and microchipping drive on Thursday, offering free microchips to pet owners at the new city hall.
Fernando Muñoz Calero, the eighth councilor and head of the Environmental and Animal Welfare Commission, said the cost of the microchips is covered by donations from the business sector. According to Sergio Beristain, founder of the Dog Beach collective, each microchip costs between 800 and 900 pesos (about $40 to $45).
The program launched last Saturday at the Puerto Aventuras municipal office, where the first 200 microchips were implanted. On Thursday, officials expect to implant at least another 100 microchips starting at 10 a.m. at the new city hall.
Interested pet owners must fill out a form available on the municipal government’s official websites, print it, and bring it to the event.
Muñoz Calero reiterated that the service will remain free as the city continues to seek support from the business sector to acquire the technology.
