Cancún Braces for 30,000 at Grito de Independencia With Road Closures and Security Operation

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Cancún’s Independence Day celebration will mobilize a large security and traffic operation, with authorities in Benito Juárez expecting as many as 30,000 people to gather at the Municipal Palace esplanade and preparing street closures and special patrols across the Fiestas Patrias.

The operation begins on the afternoon of September 15 and will involve several municipal departments, with the aim of keeping order, responding to emergencies and easing the movement of attendees.

Avenida Tulum to Close From 5 P.M.

One of the main disruptions will be Avenida Tulum, which will be partially closed in both directions from Avenida Uxmal to Avenida Cobá starting at 5 p.m.

Drivers will be diverted to a single lane on Avenida Nader running from Uxmal toward Cobá. Traffic is expected to return to normal around 2 a.m. on September 16, once the celebration ends.

Security will also extend to the beach zone, where lifeguards, Tourist Police officers and firefighters will carry out nighttime patrols in anticipation of the larger crowds expected during the Mexican night.

Second Operation for the Civic-Military Parade

Traffic restrictions will not end with the Grito. A second operation will be launched on the morning of September 16 for the Civic-Military Parade.

Avenida Tulum will be closed in both directions from 5 a.m., with additional disruptions on Avenida Nader and on one lane of Avenidas Cobá and Uxmal.

Authorities will open some lanes of Avenida Nader as alternate routes, along with the connections at Yaxchilán and Cobá and at Bonampak and Uxmal, to limit the impact on mobility.

Roads are expected to return to normal circulation around 11:30 a.m., after the parade finishes.

Fireworks Inspections Target Stores and Hotels

As part of the same operation, Civil Protection has stepped up oversight to detect the irregular sale and improper handling of fireworks.

Antonio Riveroll Ribbón, the municipal director of Civil Protection, said more than 30 operational personnel will take part alongside the Commerce Department.

Although permits to sell these products are issued by the Mexican Army, the municipality will verify that businesses and individuals handling fireworks comply with safety measures.

The inspections will also cover hotels and private establishments that use pyrotechnics at weddings, quinceañera parties and patriotic celebrations, to confirm they hold the necessary authorizations and meet required conditions.

Officials urged residents to plan their travel on both days, particularly in central Cancún, where the main Fiestas Patrias events will be concentrated.
