Bacalar, Quintana Roo — A crocodile was spotted near the Tren Maya railway tracks close to the community of Pedro Santos in Bacalar, with no incidents reported involving people.

A resident captured the animal on a dirt road adjacent to the railway, suggesting it may have moved from its natural habitat.

As of now, no environmental or civil protection authorities have intervened to secure the animal or implement preventive measures in the area.

The Bacalar region is part of a lowland jungle and wetland ecosystem that hosts species such as the Morelet’s crocodile, along with reptiles, birds, and mammals that move between water bodies, mangroves, and forested areas.

Specialists have noted that wildlife sightings near roads and developments are common in southern Quintana Roo due to the proximity of natural habitats.

Environmental organizations including WWF, Greenpeace, and the Mexican Center for Environmental Law have warned that infrastructure projects in the region can fragment ecosystems and alter wildlife movement routes. Researchers from the National Autonomous University of Mexico have also pointed out that such environmental changes can lead to species appearing in developed areas.
