Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Playa del Carmen celebrated International Migrant Day with the “Sabores del Mundo” Cultural and Gastronomic Festival at Parque Fundadores, highlighting the richness of its cultural diversity.
Municipal Tourism Secretary Diana Estefanía Hernández Flores, representing Mayor Estefanía Mercado, welcomed consuls, foreign residents, and local families to the event. She emphasized that Playa del Carmen’s true wealth lies not only in its tourism infrastructure but in its people and the thousands of stories that have arrived from different parts of the world to build community.
“Today we are not only celebrating flavors and traditions, we are celebrating recognition for all those who have chosen Playa del Carmen as their new home,” Hernández Flores stated.
The municipal official highlighted that this diversity is part of the current government’s social vision, aimed at promoting tourism with equality and inclusion. This approach transforms the traditional concept of “all inclusive” into “all included,” where no one is left out of development or well-being.
During her message, she noted that Playa del Carmen receives more than four million tourists annually and has a wide hotel offering. However, she affirmed that the destination’s greatest attraction is its diverse, supportive, and constantly evolving community.
“Beyond the numbers, the strength of this city lies in the people who have chosen it to live, work, and dream,” she emphasized.
Hernández Flores concluded by calling for celebration of this day as a brotherhood among nations, where the gastronomy, culture, and history of the peoples who now inhabit Playa del Carmen become a bridge of union and mutual respect.
The event was organized by the Migrant Care Unit in coordination with the Tourism Secretariat and the Directorate of National and International Affairs as a meeting space that promoted coexistence, recognition of cultural plurality, and citizen participation among residents and visitors.
Authorities reminded attendees that December 18 was designated by the United Nations as International Migrant Day, a date that invites visibility of the social, cultural, and economic contributions of migrants and reinforces values of respect, inclusion, and social cohesion.
With events like the “Sabores del Mundo” Festival, the Playa del Carmen Government reaffirms its commitment to an inclusive city, proud of its diversity and profoundly human, where every culture adds to and strengthens the social fabric.
