Playa del Carmen Begins Second Phase of Sewage Project to Stop Street Water from Flowing into Sea

Construction work for a new drainage system on 1st Avenue North in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Aguakan will begin the second phase of its beach collector project in central Playa del Carmen next week. The company says crews will start excavations on April 27 for a new drainage system along 1st Avenue North.

Crews will open ground on 1st Avenue North between 10th Street and 12th Street to install 142 linear meters of new drainage pipe. The project includes creating six urban drains that will connect to pipes to prevent street wastewater from flowing into the sea.

Crews will install 142 linear meters of 10-inch pipe to stop street wastewater from entering the ocean. The company claims the project will consolidate Playa del Carmen as a more sustainable city by continuing to strengthen drainage service quality with the second stage of the “Beach Collector” project.

“This strategic project in the tourist zone represents an investment of 2.5 million pesos, contributing further to the protection of the coastal environment and providing direct benefits to the community, the tourism sector, and businesses in the area,” Aguakan said.

The strategic objective of the project is to gradually eliminate wells in the coastal zone, optimizing the sanitation system and reducing environmental risks by properly channeling discharges to the Federal Zone collector.

Aguakan says the second phase will start on 1st Avenue North in the section between 10th Street North and 12th Street North, where crews will install 142 linear meters of 10-inch PVC sanitary pipe (series 25), as well as construct six new well structures.

“For the execution of this work, the open trench method will be implemented under a well-to-well construction system, including activities such as marking and delimiting the work area, cutting and demolishing pavement, excavating and removing pavers, placing sanitary pipe, as well as backfilling and compaction work,” said Jorge Rosas, Aguakan Works Coordinator in Playa del Carmen.

According to the company, the second phase of the project should conclude in August of this year.
