Pitbull Dies After Suspected Poisoning in Tulum Park, Owner Says
Tulum, Quintana Roo — A pitbull died after a walk in a local sports complex, and its owner believes the dog was deliberately poisoned. The incident has sparked outrage and renewed calls for pet-friendly spaces in the city.
Manuel, the owner, said he took his dog to the Unidad Deportiva as usual on Thursday. Within half an hour, the animal was dead.
“My dog is dead because they poisoned him here in this park!” he said in a tearful video posted on social media.
The death comes weeks after threats appeared on fake Facebook accounts warning that poison would be placed in the Unidad Deportiva, with the claim that the site was not for pets.
The case has drawn widespread condemnation online, with many demanding that those responsible be punished. Others called for the creation of dedicated pet areas, noting that Tulum lacks dog parks.
Quintana Roo’s State Prosecutor’s Office said its specialized environmental crimes unit has opened an investigation into the dog’s death, which may constitute an environmental offense.
