Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — Police on Isla Mujeres responded to a citizen complaint about a person who was reportedly pressing ATM users at a Chedraui supermarket to let him help them check their bank balances, a situation authorities said could be tied to a fraud or card-cloning attempt.
According to the municipal Public Security Department, personnel from the Directorate of Citizen Protection went to the ATM area to verify the report and gather details from the store’s security chief and manager.
Officials said the information gathered so far does not confirm that any fraud took place or that any cards were cloned. The case remains a report of possible irregular activity.
Authorities Urge Caution at Cash Machines
In response, authorities urged the public to take extra care when using ATMs and to avoid letting strangers get involved in their transactions. Their recommendations include:
- Do not allow strangers to help with withdrawals or balance checks.
- Never share your personal identification number (PIN), passwords or banking details.
- Reject offers or instructions from unknown people to review balances or move money in your accounts.
- Contact your bank immediately if you spot charges or transactions you do not recognize, so the account can be reviewed and the funds protected.
Officials Urge Formal Complaints, Not Social Media Posts
The Public Security Department said anyone who encounters a suspicious situation, or believes they have been the victim of a crime, can request immediate help through the 911 emergency line or file an anonymous report at 089.
Officials stressed that possible crimes should be reported formally to the State Prosecutor’s Office, noting that posts or accusations circulated on social media do not replace the legal process.
Authorities repeated their call for residents and visitors to stay alert during banking transactions and to report suspicious behavior so security agencies can step in.
