The MOBI public transportation system is preparing to expand to Isla Mujeres and Playa del Carmen, with three routes planned to connect island communities to the Cancun hotel zone in early 2027. In Playa del Carmen, the route program is expected to be announced in January, according to Rafael Hernández Kotasek, head of the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute (Imoveqroo).

For Isla Mujeres, Hernández Kotasek said the first three routes have already been defined: Punta Sam, Rancho Viejo and Costa Mujeres. These routes will connect those areas with Cancun and broaden transportation alternatives for residents and workers.

He said the project has already advanced through the required administrative and legislative procedures for implementation, and work is underway on the next steps to launch the service.

In Playa del Carmen, Hernández Kotasek noted that technical studies were completed a few months ago and that the City Council has already approved the necessary agreement to move forward with incorporating the municipality into the mobility model. He said the process remains in the legal stage, because integrating the system requires compliance with the relevant municipal powers and procedures.

Imoveqroo expects the route program for Playa del Carmen to be presented in early January 2027, though implementation will depend on the progress of pending procedures.

The head of Mobility emphasized that new municipalities are being incorporated gradually, with the goal of establishing a public transportation system that improves connections and offers alternative transportation options to the population.

MOBI’s expansion is part of the state strategy to reorganize public transportation in Quintana Roo, following the launch of new routes in Cancun and the gradual addition of units to the service.

Through the Isla Mujeres and Playa del Carmen projects, the state government aims to expand the system’s coverage to other areas in northern Quintana Roo.
