CANCÚN, Quintana Roo — More than 50 hotels, spas and wellness centers across Quintana Roo have already signed up to participate in the 10th edition of World Wellness Weekend, a three-day international event that will bring free fitness classes, yoga, meditation, workshops and other activities to communities around the state from September 18 to 20.
The event is designed to make wellness more accessible by asking every participating venue to offer at least one free, inclusive group activity to the public. Hotels, resorts, spas, gyms, yoga and Pilates studios, dance schools, sports clubs, massage centers and even schools and corporations are eligible to participate.
Margarita Álvarez Cantarell, World Wellness Weekend ambassador for Quintana Roo, said organizers are encouraging even more local businesses and organizations to register before September, with the goal of activating communities across the state rather than limiting participation to large luxury resorts.
That means a neighborhood yoga studio in Playa del Carmen, a gym in Cancún, a spa in Tulum or a hotel in Puerto Aventuras can all take part under the same global initiative.
What Is World Wellness Weekend?
World Wellness Weekend was launched in 2017 and is built around the idea that improving well-being does not necessarily require an expensive retreat or luxury spa treatment.
The initiative promotes five broad pillars: better sleep, nutrition, movement, mindfulness and a sense of purpose and solidarity. Its goals are aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal No. 3, which calls for ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being.
For the 2026 edition, organizers expect participation from as many as 15,000 venues in approximately 190 countries and more than 2,000 cities. Activities will begin symbolically with sunrise in New Zealand and continue around the world until sunset in Hawaii.
The types of activities can vary considerably. The official program encourages yoga, Pilates, Zumba, dance, walking, running, cycling, swimming, martial arts, meditation, breathwork, nutrition workshops, art activities and environmental projects such as beach cleanups.
What Will Happen in Quintana Roo?
The full local schedule has not yet been finalized, but organizers say more than 50 hotels and wellness businesses in Quintana Roo have already joined the 2026 event. Each registered venue must provide at least one free collective activity during the weekend. Some may offer several sessions, while others may add optional paid treatments, meals or packages around their free activity.
Past World Wellness Weekend events in the Riviera Maya have included guided meditation, yoga, fitness classes, nature walks, paddleboarding, beach cleanups, children’s activities and spa workshops.
For example, Fairmont Mayakoba’s 2025 program included core training, dance classes, nature walks, paddleboarding, functional fitness, meditation, children’s yoga and a beach cleanup.
Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Resort & Spa is also listed on the official World Wellness Weekend map as a participating wellness venue, as are several other businesses and organizations around Cancún and Playa del Carmen.
Participating Businesses and Venues
A complete official list of all 50-plus Quintana Roo participants does not yet appear to have been published in one place, and the World Wellness Map continues to be updated as businesses register and add activities.
Among the Quintana Roo venues currently identifiable through the official map and related event pages are:
- Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Resort & Spa, near Akumal
- Renova Spa at RIU Palace Las Américas, Cancún
- Renova Spa at RIU Lupita, Playa del Carmen
- ScubaCaribe at RIU Palace Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen
- Sanam’Há Santuario de Vida Eco Holístico, Playa del Carmen
Fairmont Mayakoba has also participated in previous editions with an extensive program of wellness activities, although its full 2026 schedule has not yet been published. Because registration remains open, that list is expected to grow considerably before September.
How to Find and Attend Activities
For members of the public, participation is relatively simple. There is no need to create an account. Visitors can use the official World Wellness Map to search by city, country or type of activity. Each venue page provides available contact options, and reservations are handled directly by the individual hotel, spa, studio or organization. Some activities may accept walk-ins, while others will require advance reservations because of limited space.
The official event website advises participants to check the individual venue listing carefully before attending and to contact the organizer directly with questions about capacity, accessibility, parking, what to bring or whether the activity is suitable for beginners.
The World Wellness Map can be found through wellmap.org.
How Local Businesses Can Register
Hotels and resorts are not the only businesses eligible to participate. The official program is open to spas, gyms, yoga and Pilates studios, wellness centers, massage clinics, dance schools, martial arts academies, sports associations, run clubs, beauty salons, outdoor recreation businesses, corporations and schools. Registration is free.
The minimum requirement is straightforward: offer at least one free and inclusive group activity on Friday, Saturday or Sunday during World Wellness Weekend.
Businesses that offer three different free sessions can qualify for recognition as a Wellness Champion, while those offering five activities, including one for employees and one benefiting an underserved community or environmental cause, may qualify as a Wellness Hero.
Registration is completed through the official World Wellness Map at wellmap.org.
For help with registration in Quintana Roo, Margarita Álvarez Cantarell has also invited businesses and organizations to contact her through Instagram at @margarissima.
General registration support is also available through the World Wellness Weekend team at support@wellmap.org, while general questions can be directed to contact@world-wellness-weekend.org.
Wellness Beyond the Resort Gates
One of the more interesting aspects of World Wellness Weekend is that the free activities are not intended only for hotel guests. The initiative specifically encourages participating venues to open activities to local communities, giving residents an opportunity to discover businesses, instructors and wellness programs they may not otherwise encounter.
For Quintana Roo, where some of Mexico’s most exclusive resorts and spas operate alongside small independent yoga studios, gyms and community organizations, the concept creates an unusually broad platform.
A five-star resort can offer morning yoga by the sea, while a local studio may organize meditation, Pilates or a neighborhood walk. Both count toward the same global event.
The 2026 schedule will continue to take shape in the coming weeks as additional Quintana Roo businesses register and individual venues publish their activities.
For residents interested in participating, the most practical advice is to check the official World Wellness Map closer to September, search by city and reserve directly with the venue. With more than 50 local hotels and wellness centers already involved, the challenge may be deciding which free activity to try first.
