Quintana Roo — Aguakan, the water utility serving Mexico’s Quintana Roo state, carries out more than 7,800 physicochemical and microbiological analyses each month to verify the quality of drinking water, the company announced.
The tests are performed on samples collected from catchment areas, pumping stations and residential taps, allowing the utility to track water quality along the entire supply chain and ensure compliance with federal health standards NOM-127 and NOM-179 of the Ministry of Health.
Wastewater Treatment Oversight
The monitoring extends to wastewater treatment as well. At the region’s treatment plants, Aguakan conducts more than 2,800 monthly tests to measure fats, oils, suspended solids and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), a key indicator of organic pollution.
These analyses evaluate how effectively the treatment process is working before water is discharged back into the environment, in line with federal environmental standard NOM-001-Semarnat.
Environmental Compliance
Aguakan also tracks the Environmental Impact Statements associated with its projects and applies prevention and mitigation measures approved by authorities. The company says the goal is to balance efficient service delivery with the conservation of local ecosystems.
