Nichupté Bridge 85% Done, Creates 51K Jobs in Cancún

Cancun, Quintana Roo — The Nichupté vehicular bridge, a key infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity in Cancún, has reached 85% completion and has generated more than 51,000 direct and indirect jobs, according to Jesús Antonio Esteva Medina, Secretary of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation.

The announcement was made during a morning press conference led by President Claudia Sheinbaum in Chetumal. Officials confirmed that the project, with an investment of 8.6 billion pesos, is on track for completion in December 2025.

Project Scope and Progress

The bridge consists of five segments:

• 6.5 kilometers spanning a lagoon area
• 1.5 kilometers on land
• 700 meters crossing a mangrove zone
• Two interchanges
• One steel bridge

The structure will feature three lanes—one in each direction plus a reversible lane—along with a dedicated bicycle path.

Construction Milestones

• The Colosio interchange is nearly finished.
• The land section has completed its structural phase, with crews now working on finishing touches.
• In the mangrove zone, the top-down construction method was employed to minimize environmental impact.
• The lagoon section has seen 259 beams installed, with only two remaining out of a total of 780 piles.
• The steel bridge is 90% structurally complete, pending the installation of slabs and pavement.

Direct Access to Hotel Zone

Esteva Medina highlighted that the design includes a direct connection to Avenida Kukulkán, streamlining access to Cancún’s hotel district and reducing travel times. Beyond improving mobility for residents and tourists, the bridge will also serve as a critical evacuation route during hurricanes.

The project represents a significant step in modernizing Quintana Roo’s transportation infrastructure while boosting local employment.
