Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A Chevrolet Van flipped into the roadside vegetation and its driver was injured after a LIPU passenger bus rear-ended it on Federal Highway 307, on the Playa del Carmen–Tulum stretch near Punta Venado.
The crash happened Sunday as both vehicles traveled south. According to initial reports, the bus driver — operating unit 14263 — apparently fell asleep at the wheel and failed to brake in time, hitting the rear of the van and pushing it off the roadway.
After the impact, the Chevrolet Van overturned among the vegetation along the side of the highway. The driver suffered an injury to one arm.
Paramedics gave the injured man first aid at the scene and then took him to a hospital for treatment.
National Guard officers responded to the site to secure the area, carry out the corresponding procedures and coordinate the removal of the vehicles to an impound lot.
Authorities are expected to determine the cause of the crash and assign responsibility.
