Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Nichupté Bridge, one of Cancún’s most significant mobility projects, will extend its operating hours to 1:00 AM starting May 25, 2026, as state authorities announced updated traffic rules and restrictions to ensure safety and efficiency.

The bridge currently operates from 4:30 AM to midnight, but the new schedule aims to ease traffic flow between downtown Cancún and the Hotel Zone using an intelligent reversible lane system. During early morning hours, the bridge will close for preventive maintenance and technical adjustments, though emergency vehicles will have 24-hour access.

Reversible Lane System

The bridge features three lanes, one of which is reversible to adapt to peak traffic times. From 4:30 AM to 4:00 PM, two lanes will head toward the Hotel Zone and one toward downtown. From 4:00 PM to 4:30 PM, a supervised transition period will occur. Then, from 4:30 PM until closing, two lanes will lead downtown and one toward the Hotel Zone.

Speed Limits and Restrictions

The maximum speed limit on the entire bridge is 60 km/h (37 mph). Heavy cargo vehicles are prohibited, and only motorcycles with engines over 600 cc are allowed.

Pedestrians, scooters, roller skates, and skateboards are banned from the bridge for safety reasons. Bicycles must use the designated bike lane, which will automatically close when wind speeds exceed 40 km/h.

Authorities said the bridge will have constant surveillance through the C5 system, monitoring cameras, speed radars, and direct coordination with the Mexican Navy to handle emergencies.

Recreational Activities

Once a month on Sundays, the bridge will temporarily close to vehicle traffic for recreational events such as walking, cycling, and cultural activities on the Nichupté Lagoon, promoting family and community engagement.
