Cozumel Gears Up for 55th Annual Mexican Boat Rodeo

Fishing boats at the Mexican Boat Rodeo in Cozumel

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — The island of Cozumel is preparing for one of its most iconic events of the year: the 55th edition of the Mexican Boat Rodeo, a celebration blending sport, tradition, family fun, and fishing pride in the heart of the Mexican Caribbean.

From May 15 to 17, sport fishermen, local families, domestic tourists, and international visitors will gather for three days of adrenaline, live music, gastronomy, and a passion for the sea, reaffirming Cozumel as a top sportfishing destination in Mexico.

Backed by municipal and state authorities, the tournament represents more than a competition — it is a tradition that strengthens the island’s maritime identity and promotes sustainable sports tourism.

More Than Five Decades of History

The Mexican Boat Rodeo celebrates its 55th edition in 2026, making it one of the oldest and most representative fishing tournaments in the Caribbean. Over the decades, it has brought together generations of fishermen who see the sea not just as a sport but as a way of life deeply rooted in Cozumel’s culture.

Each year, hundreds of boats participate in this marine festival, which also boosts the local economy through hotel occupancy, food consumption, and the influx of visitors drawn by the island’s festive atmosphere.

Three Days of Festivities, Music, and Competition

Activities begin Friday, May 15, with social events and organization for participants.

  • Friday, May 15: The day starts with a traditional dinner for captains and crew at 4 p.m. at La Palapita on Rafael E. Melgar Avenue. Later, the official presidium and authorities will be presented, along with the competition rules and a captains’ meeting to review technical guidelines and safety measures. The evening features live salsa music by Angelito de la Salsa y su Piquete, plus a DJ and entertainment.
  • Saturday, May 16: The excitement at sea begins. At 7 a.m., the official start flag will be raised at the fiscal dock, where dozens of boats will head to deep waters in search of the best catches. While fishermen compete offshore, a family festival with music, recreational activities, and local cuisine will take place on land. At 4 p.m., the weigh-in station opens at the fiscal dock, drawing crowds eager to see the first standings. The evening continues with live music by Denis y sus Teclados at the Flag Plaza.
  • Sunday, May 17: The final day of the rodeo. Boats head out early for the last day of competition. The final weigh-in determines winners in various categories, followed by an awards ceremony honoring the best teams and fishermen. The celebration closes with live music and a family-friendly atmosphere at the Flag Plaza.

Traditional Fish Fry: Flavor and Togetherness

One of the event’s biggest attractions is the famous Fish Fry, a gastronomic activity open to the public where locals and visitors can sample various dishes made with fresh fish. This space has become a symbol of community and culinary pride for Cozumel’s fishing community, with families gathering to enjoy Caribbean vibes, live music, and traditional island flavors.

Boost to Tourism and Local Economy

Authorities highlighted that the Mexican Boat Rodeo also generates significant economic revenue for Cozumel, directly benefiting hotels, restaurants, shops, tour operators, and service providers. The tournament strengthens the island’s promotion as an international destination for sports tourism and responsible recreational fishing, helping to position Cozumel as a key tourist hub in the Mexican Caribbean.
