New Rural Clinic in Playa del Carmen Has No Assigned Doctor

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The recently renovated medical dispensary in the rural community of Jacinto Canek is ready to open but remains shuttered because no doctor has been assigned, according to a local official.

City councilwoman María Josefina “Polaka” Musa Simón said the issue has been raised in municipal commissions without progress. She said a formal staffing request has been submitted to both the municipal and state governments.

“It is ready to operate, but it cannot operate because they haven’t given us a doctor,” Musa Simón said.

The clinic is expected to serve about 1,000 residents from 13 rural communities, sparing them the trip into Playa del Carmen for medical care.

Musa Simón said the long-term solution to such staffing gaps would be a municipal health institute with its own funding and the ability to accept donations. “But there is resistance,” she said.
