Mpox Cases Rise in Yucatan, State Ranks Second Nationwide

Mérida, Yucatán — Mpox cases are rising in Yucatán, with two new infections confirmed in the past week, bringing the state’s total to eight and making it the second most affected region in Mexico, according to the federal Health Department.

During epidemiological week 17, from April 26 to May 2, five new mpox cases were detected nationwide across four states. Yucatán accounted for two of them, while the others were reported in Mexico City, Jalisco, and Quintana Roo.

Nationally, 48 cases have been recorded so far in 2026, distributed across nine states. This represents a 58.97% decrease compared to the same period in 2025, when 117 cases were reported. All confirmed patients are male.

Mexico City leads with 24 cases, or 50% of the national total, followed by Yucatán with eight (16.67%), and Quintana Roo with seven (14.58%). Puebla has three cases, the State of Mexico has two, and Chihuahua, Guanajuato, Jalisco, and Sonora each have one.

Over the past five years, Yucatán has recorded 183 mpox cases: 160 in 2022, 10 in 2023, none in 2024, five in 2025, and eight so far in 2026.
