Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum with other world leaders at the Democracy Defense Summit in Barcelona

Barcelona, Spain — Mexico will host the next Democracy Defense Summit in 2027, officials announced at this year’s international gathering in Barcelona. The designation came at the initiative of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

The summit focused on strengthening multilateral cooperation, promoting equality, and building a technological democracy model to protect societies from disinformation, hate, and violence.

During the opening ceremony, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez highlighted President Sheinbaum’s participation and acknowledged her proposal. “She proposed Mexico as the host for the next meeting in 2027,” Sánchez said, adding that the specific date will be determined later.

The forum brought together representatives from 20 countries, including 15 heads of state and government, establishing itself as a key space for coordinating international efforts to defend democracy and global cooperation.

With this designation, Mexico reinforces its role on the international stage as a promoter of multilateral dialogue and democratic governance, projecting an agenda centered on innovation, inclusion, and peace.
