Cancún, Quintana Roo — More than 7,000 people gathered in the city center for a parade and community celebration on Wednesday, marking Cancún’s 56th anniversary as a planned tourist destination.
Mayor Ana Paty Peralta joined the festivities, which included the “Cancunense Parade” and a concert at City Hall. “I want to congratulate all Cancún residents,” Peralta said. “Whether you arrived as pioneers 56 years ago, a few years back, or just yesterday, we are all Cancún residents.”
The mayor highlighted the city’s growth from a dream into a major urban center with over a million inhabitants. “We ask that we be a great community, that we all contribute our grain of sand and love Cancún,” she added.
The parade featured nine thematic blocks representing different aspects of the city’s identity. The first block included vintage cars carrying elderly pioneers and founders, followed by the marching band from CBTIS No. 111. Subsequent blocks celebrated Cancún’s history, tourism industry, cultural scene, sports, and civic life.
“Cancún is Pioneer” featured early settlers, while “Cancún is Retro” showcased 1970s attire, referencing the year Cancún was established as a planned development. The tourism block included workers from the industry that drives the local economy, carrying flags from countries whose citizens reside in the area.
Cultural performers, Carnival royalty, athletes from various disciplines, scouts, artisans, and entrepreneurs filled out the procession. The parade concluded with firefighters and their emergency vehicles.
After the parade, the celebration moved to City Hall’s Plaza de la Reforma for a concert. Peralta, accompanied by municipal directors and councilors, cut a commemorative cake and led the singing of “Las Mañanitas” to Cancún, performed by the mariachi group “Vinto Tinto.”
The evening’s entertainment included performances by the City Hall Orchestra, the group “Son-May Hi,” animators from the nightclub “Coco Bongo,” Carnival comparsas, local youth singers, and the musical groups “Omar Corona y su norteño banda” and “Sonora Cancún.”
