Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The Mexican Navy is planning a significant investment in Playa del Carmen to establish a vessel maintenance facility that will also serve as lodging for its personnel, Mayor Estefanía Mercado announced.
Mercado said her administration has so far covered the lodging and food costs for navy personnel who have helped with the removal of sargassum from local beaches.
“The arrival of this investment will help us as a municipality,” she added.
The city has removed 28,000 tons of sargassum from its beaches to date, she said. She also welcomed the president’s announcement of more than 2 billion pesos in funding to move sargassum collection offshore.
“We have to be prepared for the next season, because we have seen this is on the increase,” she added.
