Mexican Navy and Local Agencies Test Rescue Capabilities off Cozumel

Mexican Navy personnel and local authorities participate in a maritime rescue drill off Cozumel

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — The Mexican Navy, through its Cozumel Naval Sector, led an annual maritime emergency and rescue drill off the coast of Cozumel in coordination with civil protection officials, local authorities, and shipping companies.

The exercise focused on testing coordination among the agencies responsible for maritime emergencies. Participating crews carried out firefighting maneuvers and practiced rescuing a crew member who fell overboard.

The simulated scenario began with an electrical failure that caused a fire aboard the vessel Mexico V, triggered by an overheating motor-generator. The incident activated emergency response and evacuation protocols.

The Navy said the drill is part of ongoing efforts to protect passengers, crews, and port infrastructure, while strengthening coordination with the private sector and civilian authorities.
