Mérida, Yucatán — For the first time, Mérida residents will vote to select a Green Corridor as part of the participatory budget initiative Diseña Tu Ciudad (Design Your City). Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada announced the three urban-environmental proposals aimed at mitigating heat, preserving wildlife, and reforesting the city.

A Commitment to Ecological Balance

"The best part is that no matter which proposal citizens choose, it will bring significant benefits for everyone. This is a decisive investment in something that isn’t always visible but is deeply felt: the ecological balance of our city," Mayor Patrón emphasized during a press presentation.

"On Sunday, May 11, Meridanos will not only vote for one of the three Green Corridor proposals but also for the renovation or construction of 18 parks or sports areas—two proposals in each of Mérida’s nine districts. I invite everyone to cast their vote for their preferred project at any of the 49 polling stations set up for this major civic engagement activity," she added.

The Three Green Corridor Proposals

The three Green Corridor options are:

  1. Caucel-Santa Fe: Spanning 1.3 kilometers, this corridor runs from the intersection of Avenida Santa Fe to Calle 11-C at the entrance of Gran Santa Fe Norte.
  2. Brisas: Extending 1.4 kilometers, it begins at the Central Roundabout with branches leading north and east.
  3. Oriente: Covering 1 kilometer, this corridor stretches along Calle 6 between Avenida Fidel Velázquez and Avenida Quetzalcóatl, adjacent to Servicios Públicos de Oriente.

Each proposal includes urban-environmental measures such as tree planting, wildlife conservation, irrigation systems, ecological pathways, rehabilitation of existing infrastructure (sidewalks and lighting), and signage. Complementary infrastructure will feature safe pedestrian crossings, resting areas, and maintenance access for electrical towers.

A Network of Green Lungs

The corridors will function as interconnected green spaces, promoting biodiversity, ecosystem integration, and environmental well-being. Dense vegetation along the peripheries will serve as acoustic and visual barriers, while a central axis of varied plant life will attract birds and pollinators.

This initiative, part of the Mérida Verde (Green Mérida) strategy, aims to restore 80% of local flora and fauna. It focuses on ecosystem support, environmental regulation, ecological connectivity, urban-territorial integration, sustainable mobility, and recreational use of public spaces.

"Today, we are directing resources where they matter most: toward life itself. This is a joint effort between citizens and government to build a future collectively—to choose the first Green Corridor as a legacy of ecological infrastructure, social participation, and commitment to future generations," Mayor Patrón concluded.
