Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Cristina Torres, the state’s secretary of government, said she remains interested in returning to lead Playa del Carmen but will wait for Morena’s candidate selection process to decide whether to run.
“I love Playa del Carmen,” Torres said, recalling her gratitude to the municipality where she served as mayor from 2016 to 2018.
The official said she has political aspirations but her priority is fulfilling her duties at the state government. “Whoever engages in politics and does not aspire is not a politician,” she said.
Torres acknowledged that because of her responsibilities, Playa del Carmen is one of the municipalities where she can spend the least time, as she must attend to issues across Quintana Roo. “We have to represent the government and try to do our work well as we have done these four years,” she said.
Torres was mayor of Solidaridad, the municipality that includes Playa del Carmen, from 2016 to 2018. She lost her re-election bid in 2018 to Laura Beristain of Morena.
Current Mayor Estefanía Mercado, also of Morena, is seeking re-election.
