Cancún, Mexico — The municipality of Benito Juárez will restore 77 historic and cultural monuments in Cancún this year as part of a comprehensive conservation plan led by the Committee for Cultural Heritage. Yaraledis del Rosario Tucuch Santos, Director of Municipal Heritage, confirmed the initiative, which aims to preserve the city’s identity through systematic restoration efforts.
Who Is Behind the Project?
The committee comprises representatives from multiple institutions, including:
- The Directorate of Culture
- The Municipal Institute of Planning (Implan)
- Associations of architects and engineers
- Educational institutions
Their primary responsibility will be assessing the current condition of busts, sculptures, plaques, and iconic structures—such as the old airport tower—to determine the necessary budget for restoration.
Preserving Cancún’s Historical Memory
“The importance of this committee is to conserve and promote Cancún’s cultural heritage, as many young people are unaware of the history behind the monuments that shape the city’s identity,” said Tucuch Santos.
The plan also includes restoring murals in the Municipal Palace, notably the one in the ‘Presidents’ Hall.
Restoration with Respect for Artistic Value
For works with specific authorship, such as the monument at the History of Mexico roundabout, the committee will secure permissions from the original artists or their heirs. The interventions will prioritize professional standards to maintain the structural and artistic integrity of each piece.
What About the ‘El Ceviche’ Roundabout?
Tucuch Santos clarified that the iconic ‘El Ceviche’ roundabout, frequently altered during protests, will not be part of the program. Its maintenance falls under the jurisdiction of the Directorate of General Services.
A Professional and Organized Approach
“Having a systematic registry and care plan for our cultural heritage is essential to preserving Cancún’s historical memory. With this committee, we aim to establish an orderly and professional path forward,” concluded Tucuch Santos.
