Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A man has been sentenced to 33 years and four months in prison for attempted femicide and attempted homicide, following a trial in Playa del Carmen, the State Prosecutor’s Office announced.

José Gilberto Figueroa García received 16 years and eight months for each count, to be served consecutively, for the crimes committed on April 30, 2022.

According to the investigation, a woman and her then-partner arrived at a home in the Villas Kanavayen neighborhood when they saw Figueroa García and another man. As they tried to leave, the second man got out of a vehicle and fired a gun at them.

The victims managed to drive away and went to a hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds.

Prosecutors said the attack stemmed from a prior relationship between Figueroa García and the female victim. After reviewing the evidence, the court issued the guilty verdict.

In addition to the prison term, Figueroa García must pay a fine for both crimes. Compensation for material damages remains pending.
